Paintings Department treatments range from surface cleaning and paint-layer stabilization to the complete restoration of damaged artworks. ornament

Staff conservators are skilled in treating a full range of materials and techniques, including egg tempera, Old Master and modern oils and acrylics on panel and canvas, wall murals, theatrical stage sets, reverse painted glass, and the diverse challenges of contemporary artworks. Conservators consult closely with curators and collectors on special challenges, and augment professional expertise with scholarly research, analytic imaging, and scientific analysis. WACC has prepared paintings for exhibitions in major museums in America and Europe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Musée d’Orsey, and Museo del Prado. The department will work with institutions to perform advanced condition assessments, be it for an individual painting or entire collection. Such assessments become a vital resource for collections care, managing loan and travel requests, and grant applications.  Paintings conservators regularly collaborate with other WACC departments on projects that require more than one specialty.
